Former WW2 RAFF pilot becomes Australia’s Prime Minister
The Gorton Government 10 January 1968 – 10 March 1971 was the federal executive government of Australia led by Prime Minister John Gorton.
John Gorton enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force during WW2 in 1940. He served as a fighter pilot in Malaya and New Guinea.
During his service he suffered a very bad plane accident, where he was left with a battered and scared face.
What made Gordon so unique was his rugged image, which gave him a great sence of toughness to his persona. This came out in his character in an artistic way, when one was depicting him.
As a young artist who had formal qualifications from Europe, Vlad Mosmondor was given the task to have Gordon sit for him in Parliament House, Canberra in 1969. A few of dads sketches are show here.
Then from those sketches the final sculpture was made in fibre glass as shown below.
